My Design Philosophy

"Do the Impossible.
Dream the Unimaginable."

My work ethic, my "philosophy of design," is something I am quite proud of. While being error-free and adhering to established styles are necessities of the design trade, I also believe that a piece should have a soul. By this I mean some intangible element that makes people notice, that allows them to intuitively understand what the piece is about that goes beyond just good design practices. Whether I'm working on a simple form or a major promotional poster, I always try to capture that spirit in my work.

To do this, I work very closely with each client to understand not only what the client wants, but who they are and what they do. The end result is a piece that conveys the client's message or evokes the desired emotional response seemingly without effort. The design and its content are one, and the piece flows with a life of its own.

In the end, I aim to create a piece that the customer will be proud of, regardless of the size of their target audience or the medium it is presented in.

Display Ads

Smith & Associates:
Sandspur Ad

Smith & Associates ran a regular monthly ad in a local publication called Sandspur. Each month, nine homes would be highlighted in this ad. The laytout evolved over time, sometimes being greyscale, and sometimes being run without the texture background -- this particular ad was one of the first used in the series.

The ad is a four-color process piece designed in PageMaker. The photos were scanned and touched up in Photoshop. Colors in the ad were coordinated to match the brown and orange of the Smith & Associates logo.

Smith & Associates:
Fall Luxury Collection

The Fall Luxury Collection ad was done for Smith & Associates, a Tampa Realtor, to highlight some of their most prestigious offerings in the Tampa Bay area. The ad was run in several local magaziines, and was used as a template for several later ad campaigns.

The ad was designed in PageMaker, with photo scanning and touchup done in Photoshop. It is a four-color process piece with a full bleed.

International Academy:
The Cutting Edge

The "Cutting Edge" ad was designed for use as both a print ad and a poster for the International Academy of Art and Design in Tampa. Each year the Academy sponsors a fashion show and portfolio review to highlight the work of their students and to help raise donations for Easter Seals. This ad ran in Tampa Bay Magazine to promote the 1996 event.

The layout was done in Quark XPress. The background and photos were edited in Photoshop, as was some logo touchup work. The ad was set in four-color process, and the fional print size was 7x9.75. The promotional poster size was output as several sizes, depending on its intended display location.

Flyers

Memorial Health SBAR Chart

The SBAR Chart was a simple notepad flyer for nurses and doctors to use to document and communicate issues that may arise during the course of their day. SBAR is a communications model used by many hospitals to quickly and accurately document special situations or incidents for future reference and action.

The chart was printed single-sided on 8.5 x 11 and did not have a bleed. Sheets were typically padded with a chipboard back in pads of 50 sheets. The colors were CMYK, using the HCA brand colors. The overall design was in compliance with HCA South Atlantic’s standard branding specs.

Lotus Notes Ad Slick

"Discover the Power of Waldec and Lotus Notes" is a two page ad slick created for The Waldec Group. It was one of a long series of similar pieces, each highlighting a different business feature, opportunity, offering, or other aspect of The Waldec Group. This piece served to promote their Lotus Notes training facilities.

The piece is a double-sided two-color spot job done in Quark XPress on the PC. Graphics were edited in either Photoshop or Corel Draw, depending on their type.

Posters

A Fistful of Rage

"A Fistful of Rage" was a four-color process poster designed to promote a live-action roleplaying event at Necronomicon, an annual science-fiction convention held in Tampa.

The game was set in the Old West, so the poster was given a look reminiscent of a wanted poster mounted on a tree. Since the game was also a live-action roleplaying event, a movie poster motif was also incorporated into the design. The client was especially pleased with this, since participants in the game played the roles of their characters, much as actors do in a movie.

The project was done in Photoshop in full process color, and the final printed size was standard legal size, 8.5x14.

The First Millennial Foundation

The "Millennial" poster was created as a promotional art piece for the First Millennial Foundation, a non-profit organization working to advance civilian exploration and colonization of space. The poster incorporates several themes used in the Foundation's book, "The Millennial Project," by Marshall T. Savage, founder of the First Millennial Foundation.

The project was done in Photoshop, and made heavy use of the Internet for proofing and delivery of the final design, which was printed as a 32x53 size piece. It was done in four-color process.

HealthTrust Heroic Poster

This was a fun piece designed as an eye-catch for street-level traffic. Comic book superhero movies were quite the rage at the time, so the idea was to take a bit of inspiration from their popularity and provide an entertaining bit of eye-candy to promote the business and create interest.

The poster was built as a CMYK design in Illustrator and mainly used modified stock art to fit the silhouetted comicbook superheroes motif. The final art was 18x40, but it was a vector design that could be upscaled easily on the customer’s digital printers. This allowed the finished piece the flexibility to be mounted as a door poster or as a hanging banner, in the most convenient size.

HCA 2021 Holidays and Health Observances

The Holidays and Health Observances poster was created well in advance of the new year for use by each HCA hospital's Marketing Department. The poster listed all of the standard holidays and recognitions, particularly those that acknowledged healthcare events and healthcare workers. The Marketing Departments often relied on this poster to plan events at their hospitals for patients, staff, and their community at large.

This was an 11x17 poster, printed in CMYK on digital printers. It could also be scaled up for larger wall poster use, as needed. It was built with the standard HCA colors and branding. The final design was intended as a template piece, so the logo and hospital information in the bottom left would be updated and customized for each facility that ordered it.

Medical Executive Committee Poster

Team posters like this Medical Executive Committee poster for Memorial Health | Savannah were a common item for most hospitals. They are typically in employee lounges and administrative areas so staff will know who to consult with for issues relating to each team’s role at the hospital.

Sizes varied depending on team size, but this particular example was 21 x 27. It was built in InDesign in CMYK for inhouse digital printing on large format printers, using HCA’s brand colors. The photos were scaled and positioned manually so that each face was of a comparable size. Paragraph styles were used for the name and title/position for quick and easy consistency.

Table Tents

Social Distancing Table Tent

This Social Distancing table tent was created for Coliseum Northside Hospital in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The cards were placed on tables and counters in the public areas of the hospital to help build awareness to prevent the spread of the virus.

It was a two-panel table tent with a slotted base. The full piece was 4x18, with the two patient-facing panels measuring 4x6 after assembly. The design used Coliseum’s brand colors in CMYK for digital printing, with a full bleed. Both panels were identical mirrors of each other, and the art was composed of vector shapes and elements built in InDesign.

BE FAST Table Tent

Trident Health wanted a BE FAST table tent to help spread awareness of the warning signs of stroke. The table tents were to be placed in dining areas and public common areas, where both visitors and patients could easily see them.

This was a 2-panel table tent, mirrored on each panel, with a slotted base. The unfolded piece was 8x18, with the front and back panels measuring 8x6 after folding and assembly. The design used the Trident brand colors in CMYK for digital printing, and included a full bleed. The art used was composed of vector shapes and elements that were built in Illustrator and dropped into InDesign for sizing, positioning, and colorization.

Rack Cards

ER Patient Passport

The Patient Passport gave patients at Memorial Health a convenient “at-a-glance” review of their current testing status, as well as a synopsis of the timetable they should expect following their tests.

It was a standard double-sided 9x4 rack card for Memorial Health. Rack cards like these were a common format that HCA’s hospitals used for informational pieces and feedback forms. This card also included an area for a Patient Label so it could be easily scanned and incorporated into the patient’s medical record.

The card was built in InDesign, and incorporated the hospitals standard brand colors and branded art in CMYK format for digital printing by Xerox. The image on the back panel was a stock photo from Getty, and the art on the front was a standard Wong-Baker Faces diagram that was recolored to be consistent with the hospital’s brand colors.

Postcards & Mailers

No-Salt Seasoning Recipe Card

This 7x5 recipe card was created for Memorial Hospital of Jacksonville as part of their cardiac health educational material. The design used white space and light colors for high visual appeal and to better make the colored spices “pop” on the page. The photos are stock art from Getty.

The design was built in InDesign using MHJ’s CMYK brand colors. The card was printed digitally inhouse and distributed as a stand-alone piece and as part of a larger cardiac health package.

Bay Area Tree Service

This was a 5.75x4 postcard for a Tampa-based tree removal service. To reflect the natural nature of the customer, a heavy green color emphasis was used. The customer had no photographs to supply, so clean, professional stock landscaping imagery was used. The card was built in InDesign, using background elements built in Photoshop. Vector art, such as the gold discount plaque and the Super Guarantee logo, were built in InDesign itself. The card was distributed as part of a package of postcards as well as provided as a stand-alone mailer, with a layout in compliance with postal regulations, and includes the postage paid indicia and an area for a return address.

Josie’s Grab & Go

This Virginia restaurant wanted a clean modern look for their card, with a heavy emphasis on a wide variety of quality meals. Eight stock images were selected for both front and back of this 5.75x4 postcard, and the message was kept simple, leaving the name and the images as the dominant elements. The card was part of a bundle of advertising cards, so was not set up as a self-mailer. The photographic backgrounds were set in Photoshop, while the text and glow effects were in InDesign. The card itself was printed on cardstock, with the front in gloss and the back in a matte finish.

Taste of Punjab

This Indian restaurant sought a clean, classical 5.75x4 postcard that worked as both an ad for their grand opening and as a coupon. I began by building the background, combining a light stucco texture with an overlaid vector map image of the Punjab, India, area, then completed the effect with a multiply layer to add shadowing effects. Stock images of traditional Indian cuisine were then added. I used softly beveled gold lettering for the customer's name, to convey a sense of elegance and refinement, and followed through with a light gold and tan color scheme for the remaining text. This also worked to complement the browns of the background image. Brighter reds and blues were used in the coupons on the back to better help them stand out. All work was done in InDesign and Photoshop.

Clearview

A "sparkling clean" motif was extensively used in this ad for a pressure washing and window cleaning service. This 6x4.75 card was designed as a postage-paid mailer, and the back was built in accordance with postal requirements. The customer's name was given a clean glass-like appearance, which was further emphasized with the addition of sparkles. Soft blues were chosen as the primary color scheme to further emphasize the "clean" nature of their business. Layout was done in InDesign, with background textures tweaked in Photoshop. Vector elements, such as the "sparkles" and the gold discount plaque, were built and placed in InDesign.

CTL Lawn Care

This 5.75x4 card uses the same core template as the "Bay Area Tree Service" card. We often used this technique to improve our productivity, without sacrificing quality to the customer -- it was important to keep track of where the customers were, of course, so that the same style card would not be duplicated in the same advertising market. And, despite being based on the same template, I always tried to "mix things up" enough to give each a more unique appearance.

For CTL, the emphasis was on lawn care, so a selection of stock lawn images were used on the front. On the back, their three separate discount offers were separated and highlighted individually. The card was built in InDesign, as were the vector elements, such as the Super Guarantee logo and the gold plaques. Photoshop was used for the front imagery.

Texas Roadhouse

This steakhouse wanted a card that emphasized their low "Early Dine" option and its low price, and so it became the dominant element on the card. I selected a more rustic serif typeface and paired it with an antiqued paper background to give the ad more of an "Old West" feel. The customer provided both their "Texas Roadhouse" logo and the "Call Ahead" logo, and I chose the stock images of steak meals. Both sides of this 6x4.25 postcard were printed with the same art, and it was distributed in a package of postcard-style ads.

Duff Insurance Agency

A clean and professional modern image was the goal for this customer's 6x4.75 self-mailer postcard. For the front, I selected a mix of photos to represent the main coverage options for Duff Insurance. On the back, the customer name is highlighted and the eye is drawn to the free quote offer. I used a blue theme both for it's modern appeal, especially when combined to a clean modern sanserif type, and for it's positive emotional nature. The front of the card was done in Photoshop, with type added in InDesign, while the back panel was entirely build in InDesign.

Villa Tuscanna

Villa Tuscana wanted to capture the essence of a classic Italian restaurant with their postcards, so I used the "Taste of Punjab" layout as a foundation -- the background is the lightly textured stucco with an overlaid shadow layer, and a softly beveled gold effect is used for their name. The customer had provided several photos, and a considerable amount of text for inclusion on their card, so I incorporated the photos into the front design and left it primarily as an eye-catching photographic display to highlight their name and Italian meals. On the back, I presented the text cleanly, using different styles to provide good visual diversification for the reader. I highlighted the key offerings of the restaurant with a gold plaque design, which was built in InDesign.

West Florida Paint & Design

For this Bay Area painter, I began by pulling together a wide selection of vibrantly painted interior and exterior walls. These images were assembled in Photoshop to form the front of the card in a checkerboard style. The caption is from the front is repeated on the reverse of the 5.75x4 card, where the customer asked for a strong red influence. Since the customer had very little text to convey, I split the back-of-card layout into three sections -- at the top is a summary of the customer's offerings, in the middle is a prominently highlighted discount offering, and at the bottom is the customer's name and phone number. The requested red is provided with a dominant art element, a dash of red paint and a freshly painted red floor at the bottom of the card,

T.M. Lucas, Bookkeeping & Accounting

T.M. Lucas wanted to draw upon the frustration that many experience when trying to manage their own books, and so the stock images of a tired man huddled over his paperwork and the confusing swirl of receipts were selected. I selected a somber light tan color to complement the color of the receipts, and then chose a vibrant blue to draw a more positive line of attention to the customer's name and contact information. This was a 6x4.75 postage paid self-mailer card, printed on cardstock with a glossy front and matte back.

Brochures

Coliseum Outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program

This was a standard two-panel promotional brochure for a pulmonary rehab program at Coliseum Medical Center. The hospital used brochures like this to promote many of the various treatment programs they offered to patients.

The brochure was built in InDesign, using stock photos and a map provided by the hospital. The design incorporated the hospital’s standard brand colors in CMYK into an 8x9 two-panel brochure with full bleed, which would then be bi-folded to a finished size of 4x9. Printing was done on digital Xerox presses.

Coliseum STAR Trauma Wellness Program Brochure

Because the customer had more information on this program to convey to patients than space to convey it with their standard brochure design, the layout for this brochure borrowed from the Coliseum booklet template as well. The end result is an excellent piece that combines the booklet and brochure designs to present the information clearly, while still complying with the hospital’s brand requirements.

The final piece was printed as two double-sided 8x16 pages, saddle-stitched together, and bi-folded to a finished size of 8x8. The design used the Coliseum Behavioral Health brand colors in CMYK, for digital printing. Stock photos and a map provided by the customer were used in the design, with some color manipulation to recolor some items to the hospital colors (the luggage on page 6 and the cord of the stethoscope on page 5).

Coliseum Northside Hospital Spine Services Brochure

The Spine Services brochure for Coliseum Northside Hospital was designed as a 3-panel brochure. The inside spread only contained enough copy for two panels, so rather than having a hard divide for an image in the third flap, I bled it across the gutter and gave it a fade into the copy on one side, while bleeding it over the CNH border frame and off the page on the other. This softened the image as well as kept a sharp focus on the patient in the imagery, and also served as a visual lead to the back flap.

The brochure was built in InDesign using stock photos and a map provided by the customer. The design used the Coliseum brand colors in CMYK for digital printing. The folded size was 4.5x8.5, and the piece was printed on 80# card stock.

Video Marketing Enterprises

Video Marketing Enterprises offered videos of various locations for personal and corporate relocation. This was an 8x925 two-panel brochure to promote and order some of their video series. Since both their product line and their pricing was subject to change, the piece had to provide an inexpensive option for such updates without sacrificing quality.

The outside panel was printed in four-color process, the inside panel was two spot colors, to make updates to the prices or items easier and more affordable for the client to introduce in later print runs. The brochure had one central fold, giving the final product a 4x9.25 profile. The piece was designed in Quark XPress on the PC.

ComputerEase

The ComputerEase accounting program was used throughout the construction industry and marketed by a number of distributors nationwide. To present their product with a consistent advertising message across multiple vendors, if was decided to use a template design for their marketing brochure. The brochure uses two spot colors, blue and black, and can be easily updated to reflect the name and address of each separate vendor (in the sample I have here, the vendor was a company named CM Systems). A large quantity of shells were printed first, and then as each retailer needed brochures, their logo, name, and address could then be printed on the inside and outside of each shell in the desired quantity. The brochure was built in Quark XPress, with image work done in Photoshop.

Newsletters

Unplugged

Unplugged was a two-page newsletter distributed by The Waldec Group, a technology and training provider in Tampa. It was distributed to customers of The Waldec Group to keep them up-to-date on new classes offered by Waldec, new developments in computer technology, and general news and events at Waldec.

The 2-page newsletter is a two-color spot job created entirely in Quark XPress on the PC. The graphics used in the newsletter were created and edited in Photoshop and Corel Draw, depending on if they were vector or bitmap.

Packaging

60+ Drink Boxes

60+ was a vitamin-enriched beverage for seniors available in three flavors: Vanilla, Chocolate, and Strawberry. It was produced by a Tampa company and distributed nationally.

The design of the packaging for each flavor used several programs. The layout was based in Illustrator, using a packaging template provided by TetraPak. The different "seas" were rendered in Bryce and imported into the Illustrator layout. Photoshop was also used to create the 60+ logo and flavor banners. The text and other elements were created in Illustrator. The designs were all four-color process.

Ultra Pure Bottled Water Label

Ultra Pure is a Tampa-based bottled water company. They wanted a new label for their 32-ounce water bottle. The design needed to incorporate images to convey the purity and spring-fresh nature of their product and also provide a large visible placement for their name.

The design for the label was done in Illustrator, using a stock background art element touched up in Photoshop. The text and brand name were done in Illustrator. The piece is a four-color process design, and a later version also added a metallic gold ink in place of the process gold strips at the top and bottom of the label.

Logo Design

Corwin Design & Graphics

In 1999, Corwin Design & Graphics decided to update their logo to a more modern design. A competition was held amongst the employees to design a new logo, and this was my submission. The owner eventually settled on a design of her own creation, but I was always pleased with the smooth lines of this design. It has a very modern appearance and would lend itself well to a variety of applications.

The logo was created in Illustrator. Since it was just a spec piece, it remains a one-color black design.

Relo Interior Services, Inc.

Relo Interior Services is a Tampa home furnishing contractor. They sought a new logo for use on their business paperwork as well as the signage outside their offices. The logo was made in a spot color version, a black-and-white version, and a process version, each for specific utilizations.

The logo is two spot colors and was designed in Illustrator to specific customer input. I worked very closely with the client on this project, as they had a very specific idea of what they wanted their logo to look like.

Waldec/IKON

After the Waldec Group and IKON merged, a new logo was necessary. This design was fairly straightforward, and was primarily a combination of the two existing logos for Waldec and IKON. The logo was requested in two color formats, the first a basic black and white image, the second using two spot colors for red and grey (Pantone 185 and 425, respectively).

IBM Corporation: RAMAC

This was a logo designed for use with one of IBM's RAMAC server systems. It was a four-color process design with a clean modern style. The logo was primarily use on in-house materials and customer presentations. It was created using CorelDraw.

The Home Association

The Home Association sought a simple festive variation of their standard logo for use in holiday promotions. This design was built in Adobe Illustrator, and replaced the normal double-line oval of the Home Association's logo with a wreath of holy. The logo was originally built as a black-only design, but it was later converted to color and used in a spot-color format as well.
